Seventeen-year-old Gigi Lovelle was once a rising soccer prodigy, until her mother’s death two years ago left her carrying a guilt she still hasn’t learned how to name. But when her Indonesian grandmother arrives in Boston for her first and what may be her final summer in America, Gigi begins revisiting the parts of herself she abandoned alongside soccer. Opung’s world of strip mall groceries and late-night bowls of Indomie stands in quiet contrast to the Lovelle family’s galas, endowments, and country clubs. As Gigi is pulled deeper into her father’s world of legacy and privilege — and toward the future everyone else seems ready for her to claim — she becomes increasingly haunted by the belief that moving forward means leaving the people she loves behind.
