Summer Kang has spent years waiting for the role that will make her an actress. Her estranged childhood friend, Billie Bloom, was once hailed as Hollywood’s next big star, but one disastrous franchise later, the industry no longer takes her seriously. When they unexpectedly collide at Harvard after years of estrangement, their uneasy reconciliation turns into a plan. If Hollywood won’t cast them, they’ll cast themselves in a screenplay based on Summer's life.

Determined to get their movie made, they move to Los Angeles, where Summer hustles through cattle calls while Billie discovers that childhood fame doesn’t make her a star Hollywood wants to build around. Worse, buyers love their screenplay but insist neither of them is enough to get the film greenlit. Summer and Billie revise the screenplay to attract a star who is.
